For my Senior Seminar project, I would like to research Ovarian Cancer. Ovarian Cancer is called the “silent killer” because the symptoms are subtle, and are easily confused with other diseases. My mother’s co-worker and friend of both of ours, Dara was struck with this devastating disease. I will help with the Sandy Rollman Ovarian Cancer Foundation and their events. I will volunteer at their annual Gala in the fall, or Sandy Sprint 5k Run in April. I could also possibly help with the Dragon Boat Race in October. I will volunteer with Robin Cohen, one of the founders of the Sandy Rollman Ovarian Cancer Foundation, who was also Sandy Rollman’s nurse. I will benefit from this volunteerism by learning more about the disease and working to raise funds to find a cure for this silent killer. I will be able to educate the Springfield Township High School community about the symptoms of this cancer. I will help donate money to the Sandy Rollman Ovarian Cancer Foundation by selling bracelets and teal shoelaces. I will demonstrate this topic and my experience by interviewing Ovarian Cancer survivors such as Dara, and other survivors who are part of the Sandy Rollman Ovarian Cancer Foundation. I will complete this project by working with Robin at the Sandy Rollman Ovarian Cancer Foundation, scheduling interviews with cancer survivors and researching Ovarian Cancer. My plan is to meet with my mentor, Robin and set up interviews with cancer survivors when we both have time outside of school, track and her working. I will sell bracelets, teal shoelaces to my friends, family and classmates. My family has agreed to provide transportation to the meetings and the Gala. I will need my family, Robin, Dara and cancer survivors to interview. I will need time to research more about Ovarian Cancer. My final presentation with consist of journals, photos, videos, facts, bracelets and shoelaces!
